Naphyrone

Naphyrone, also known as O-2482 or naphthylpyrovalerone, is a stimulant drug from the cathinone family. It works by blocking the reuptake of the brain chemicals serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine, increasing their levels in the brain.

It has appeared as a new designer drug sold under names like NRG-1. However, many products labeled NRG-1 did not actually contain naphyrone, and some samples contained impurities such as the α-naphyrone isomer, making its effects unclear and potentially more dangerous.

In the United Kingdom, naphyrone emerged after bans on similar drugs. It was not immediately illegal, but in July 2010 the government banned it and made possession and sale illegal as a Class B drug. Safety data for naphyrone is very limited, so its risks are not well understood, and some products marketed as related substances have contained other illegal stimulants.

Naphyrone is illegal in several countries, including the United States, where it is classified as a Schedule I substance. Pharmacologically, it acts as a strong triple reuptake inhibitor, affecting serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine transporters, though the effects of the less-studied α-naphyrone form remain unknown.

In short, naphyrone is a powerful but poorly understood designer stimulant that has been banned in many places due to safety concerns.
