Redentor (horse)
Redentor (Japanese: ヘデントール) is a Japanese Thoroughbred known for excelling in long-distance turf races. He was bred by Northern Farm, owned by U Carrot Farm Ltd., and trained by Tetsuya Kimura. His sire is Rulership, with King Kamehameha as grandsire, and his dam is Corcovado, whose sire is Stay Gold. The name Redentor comes from the Portuguese word for “redeemer,” a nod to the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro.
Redentor began his career in Japan, debuting at Tokyo in a 2,000-meter turf race with Christophe Lemaire, showing a strong finish after a patient ride. He then won at Nakayama and another track, building his early record. In his first graded race, the Aoba Sho, he finished eighth. He followed with wins in the Machida Tokubetsu and Nihonkai Stakes, earning a spot in the Kikuka Sho. He finished second in the Kikuka Sho behind Urban Chic.
In 2025, Redentor won the Diamond Stakes, a long 3,400-meter turf race in Tokyo, and then surged to victory in the Tenno Shō (Spring), his first major Grade 1 win. After this success, he was considered for international campaigns such as the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe and the Juddmonte International but could not take part due to injuries.
Redentor was later registered for the Arima Kinen and finished tenth in the fan vote, a move that caused some controversy as it affected other horses’ chances. His career record stands at 9 starts with 6 wins and 2 second-place finishes, earning around ¥486 million.
