Museum Witt
Museum Witt Munich (MWM) was an independent museum in Munich, Germany, with the world’s leading collection of certain moths. It closed in 2023, and its collection was handed to the Bavarian State Collection of Zoology. The museum was founded in 1980 by Thomas J. Witt. The Witt family started Witt Weiden, one of Germany’s oldest mail‑order houses. Since 2000, Museum Witt has been part of the Bavarian State Collection of Zoology in Munich. The combined collection includes about ten million specimens from around the world. About 3–3.5 million are butterflies at Museum Witt, with about 7 million more butterflies in the Bavarian Collection. The museum employed scientists and had a sizable library. Thomas J. Witt received the Ritter-von-Spix Medal in 2001 and an honorary doctorate from the University of Munich in 2013.
