Technological University of the Shannon: Midlands Midwest
Technological University of the Shannon: Midlands Midwest (TUS) is a public technological university in Ireland. It opened on 1 October 2021 as Ireland’s third technological university, created by merging the Athlone Institute of Technology (AIT) and the Limerick Institute of Technology (LIT). It serves the midlands and midwest and has campuses in Limerick, Athlone, Thurles, Clonmel and Ennis.
The university has about 14,000 students and 1,200 staff. The president is Vincent Cunnane and the chair is Josephine Feehily. Its colours are gold and black, and the website is tus.ie.
A brief history: LIT began in 1852 as the School of Ornamental Art and later became Limerick Institute of Technology. AIT started in 1970 as the Athlone Regional Technical College and became AIT in 1997. In 2019 the two institutes formed a consortium to pursue technological university status; government approval came in 2021, and TUS began operating. The Limerick School of Art & Design is now a faculty of TUS. The university is governed by a council chaired by Feehily, with Cunnane as president, and it conducts research across several institutes and centres.
