Muhlenberg South High School
Muhlenberg South High School was a public high school in Greenville, Kentucky. It opened in 1990 after five smaller schools merged. It served grades 9–12, had about 700 students, and a small rural campus. The school colors were red, orange, and gold, and the mascot was the Suns (Sun Drop). The principal was Randy McCarty. The school closed in 2009 when Muhlenberg County combined South and North into Muhlenberg Mustangs.
Athletics and activities were led by the South Suns in the Kentucky High School Athletic Association. Highlights included:
- Girls cross country: 2006 state champions (Suzanne Holt won the individual title); 2007 runners-up.
- Girls’ soccer: district champions in 2006 and 2007.
- Boys’ basketball: 2006 season 16–13, with an 11-game winning streak (the longest in school history).
- Football: rivaled the Muhlenberg North Stars for the Solar Bowl, which South won five straight years.
Notable accomplishments and alumni:
- Weightlifting: Myron Bard (1994) and Byron Masden (2001) were state champions; Masden also set multiple national records and later excelled in college.
- Chad Clemons (class of 2007) played professional baseball and later became a strength coach for the Baltimore Orioles.
- The marching band, the Muhlenberg South Marching Suns, won state championships in 2007 after strong showings in 2006 and 2008.
- The school had leaders in FFA (Hannah Lovell as state president, Derrick Benton as state vice-president) and active National Honor Society members. The school newspaper was revived and earned awards.
