John B. Nelson, born January 12, 1936, is an American Republican politician and engineer from Arizona. He began his political career on the Phoenix City Council in 1983, representing district 4. In March 1994, when Mayor Paul Johnson resigned to run for governor, Nelson, then vice mayor, served as acting mayor for a brief period (March 17–28) until an interim successor was chosen. He won a fourth term on the council and a third term as vice mayor in 1999. In 2000, he left the council to run for the Arizona House of Representatives, starting his term in 2001 representing district 17. After redistricting, he won election in District 12 in 2002, serving with fellow representative Jerry Weires; they were reelected in 2004, and Nelson ran unopposed in 2006. In 2008 he was elected to the Arizona Senate from District 12 and served until 2013, preceded by Robert Blendu and succeeded by Andy Biggs. Nelson is a professional engineer.
