Walking on Sunshine is a cheerful, upbeat song by British rock band Katrina and the Waves, written by guitarist Kimberley Rew. It first appeared on their 1983 album Walking on Sunshine. A re-recorded version was included on their 1985 album Katrina and the Waves and released as the second single on April 15, 1985, with “Going to Liverpool” as the B-side.

Musically, the song is in B-flat major with a bright, pop‑rock tempo.

The track was a worldwide hit: it reached No. 4 in Australia, No. 9 in the United States, and No. 8 in the United Kingdom. It was the band’s first US Top 40 hit and their biggest UK hit until 1997’s “Love Shine a Light.”

At first, some band members weren’t sure about the song, but it became their signature tune. The band kept the publishing rights, and royalties from airplay and advertisements have been very lucrative.

In 2010, a re-recorded version was released for the 25th anniversary. In 2015, BMG Rights Management acquired the song along with Kimberley Rew’s and Katrina and the Waves’ other works.

The song has appeared in films, TV shows, and advertisements, and it was featured in a Glee mashup with Beyoncé’s “Halo.” It remains the band’s best‑known hit and a sunny anthem from the 1980s.
