Muhammad Rahim Khan Madrasah
The Muhammad Rahim Khan Madrasah is a large Islamic school in Itchan Kala, the old town of Khiva, Uzbekistan. It sits opposite the Konya Ark citadel and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site. Built in 1871 by Khan Said Muhammad Rahim II, who was also a poet known as Feruz Shah, it was the last of Khiva’s big madrasahs. The rectangular building measures about 62 by 50 meters and is arranged around a central courtyard with four iwans. It has corner towers, a grand entrance with a long vestibule and a five-span arcade, student rooms covered with Balkhi-style domes, and utility rooms. A domed mosque is in the south wing.
