NGC 5101
NGC 5101 is a lenticular (barred) galaxy in the Hydra constellation. It was discovered by William Herschel on March 28, 1786. The galaxy lies about 89 million light-years away and is roughly the size of the Milky Way, spanning about 150,000 light-years. Its visible appearance is about 5.4 by 4.6 arcminutes.
NGC 5101 is part of the NGC 5061 group (LGG 341), a small galaxy cluster of around 10 members that includes NGC 5061 and NGC 5078. It sits roughly 0.5 degrees from NGC 5078 on the sky, with both galaxies at similar distances from Earth. One supernova has been observed in NGC 5101: SN 1986B, a Type I event discovered in February 1986.
