Miss New York Chinese Pageant is a beauty contest in New York City that selects the city’s representative for the Miss Chinese International pageant held in Hong Kong each year. It has also been known as Miss New York Chinese, Miss Chinese New York, and previously Miss Greater Chinatown NYC Beauty Pageant.
History in brief: The pageant has roots in New York’s Chinatown community. Winners from 1992 to 2000 used the title Miss Greater Chinatown NYC. The pageant began in 2001 as Miss NY Chinese, and over time the name evolved to Miss New York Chinese Pageant. Each year the winner goes on to compete at Miss Chinese International.
Eligibility: Contestants are typically aged 17 to 25 and usually have some knowledge of the Chinese language, along with other entry requirements set by the organizers.
Acting and careers: Past winners have often pursued entertainment work in China, Hong Kong, or mainland China. Notable examples include Michelle Ye and Fala Chen, who became actresses with TVB. Some winners have also pursued opportunities in mainland China.
