Brenda Dickinson
Brenda Dickinson is a British archaeologist who specializes in Roman pottery, especially the stamps used by potters. She worked with Brian Hartley at the University of Leeds to catalog samian stamps from central and western Europe over about 40 years. Their nine-volume publication in 2008, Names on Terra Sigillata: An Index of Makers’ Stamps & Signatures on Gallo-Roman Terra Sigillata (Samian Ware), lists around 300,000 stamps from 5,000 potters. Dickinson helped turn Hartley’s idea into a published book, and the volumes are accompanied by a database hosted by RGZM. She wrote many site reports on samian stamps. She was an Honorary Visiting Fellow in Classics at Leeds from 2006 to 2012 and was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries in 1994. A Festschrift appeared in her honor in 2012, and in 2013 she and colleagues received the John Gillam Prize from the Study Group for Roman Pottery.
