1820 Vermont gubernatorial election
The 1820 Vermont gubernatorial election was held on September 5, 1820. With incumbent Jonas Galusha not running again and the Federalist Party dissolved, Democratic-Republican Richard Skinner was the only major candidate.
The Vermont General Assembly met in Montpelier on October 12 to review votes for governor and other offices. They declared Skinner won a one-year term by a large margin.
Lieutenant governor: incumbent Paul Brigham did not run. William Cahoon, a Democratic-Republican, was elected to a one-year term. Vote totals were not published, but a contemporary newspaper noted only 1,007 votes were cast for scattering opposition.
Treasurer: Benjamin Swan was elected to a one-year term, his twenty-first. Swan, though nominally a Federalist, was usually backed by the Democratic-Republicans and often ran unopposed. No vote totals were recorded, but a October 17 newspaper said Swan was unanimously reelected with no votes for other candidates.
Governor’s race results: Skinner received 13,152 votes, about 93.4% of the popular vote. County results showed Skinner carrying most counties.
