Mishima Island, Yamaguchi
Mishima Island is a small island in the Hagi area of Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan, in the Sea of Japan. It sits about 44 kilometers from the city of Hagi and covers about 7.7 square kilometers. The island has around 829 residents in 458 households.
In May 1905, near Mishima, the Battle of Tsushima occurred during the Russo-Japanese War. One captured Russian ship, the Admiral Seniavin, was renamed Mishima when it joined the Japanese Navy.
Mishima is home to a rare native cattle breed called Mishima cattle. It was declared a Japanese National Treasure in 1928, and only two native cattle breeds remain in Japan—the other is Kuchinoshima on Kuchinoshima island.
The island is also known for Mishima clay, a dark red, iron-rich clay used to make Hagi ware, a traditional style of pottery.
