Michael Hewson Crawford (born 7 December 1939) is a British historian who specializes in ancient Rome and coins. He was born in Twickenham and studied at St Paul’s School, Oriel College, Oxford (BA, MA), and the British School at Rome. He began his career at Christ’s College, Cambridge, becoming a research fellow in 1964 and later a fellow and university lecturer in ancient history (1969–1986). From 1986 to 2005 he was Professor of Ancient History at University College London, after which he became an emeritus professor and continued some teaching while working on Projet Volterra. Crawford has held visiting professorships at universities around the world. He has been honored as a Fellow of the British Academy (1980), a Foreign Member of the Istituto Lombardo (1990), a Foreign Corresponding Member of the Institut de France (2006), and Officier de l’Ordre des Palmes Académiques (France, 2001). He was awarded the medal of the Royal Numismatic Society (1984) and is a member of the Italian Numismatic Society.
