Primeval series 5
Primeval Series 5 is the fifth and final run of the British sci-fi show. It has six episodes and first aired from 24 May to 28 June 2011 on the digital channel Watch, with ITV showing it in 2012. Most of the cast from Series 4 returned, and a new main character, April Leonard (Janice Byrne), joined the team.
Production and tone
- Series 5 was filmed back-to-back with Series 4 in 2010. It mostly shot in Ireland, especially Dublin, to take advantage of location variety and tax incentives. The visual effects were created by The Mill.
- The story was written to be darker than Series 4. It focused on the motives of Philip Burton (Alexander Siddig) and Matt Anderson (Ciarán McMenamin) and aimed to answer longstanding questions about the anomalies.
- The team was written to feel tighter and more united, with a clear path for character development.
Key episodes and ideas
- The third episode features time travel to Victorian London, where Matt and Emily Merchant (Ruth Bradley) pursue a dromaeosaur, and the action blends with melodrama and a Star Trek-style nod.
- Creatures return or debut, including a form of a big future predator. Notable additions include a swimming dromaeosaur named Balaur, giant burrowing insects, and the return of the future predators in a slightly different guise. A Tyrannosaurus rex also appears.
- The two final episodes were designed as a two-part finale that ties up the ongoing plots and gives a definite ending. The conclusion also resolves the Abby–Connor relationship and wraps up storylines from the past two seasons.
Reception and aftershocks
- Critics praised the series for its effects, character development, and homages to classic science fiction. The two-part finale was especially well received for delivering a big, satisfying ending.
- On Watch, the series was a hit for a digital channel, but when shown on ITV in 2012 it posted its lowest ratings in Primeval history, which led to no renewed series for a sixth season.
- The home media release (DVD and Blu-ray) includes a behind-the-scenes documentary called New Dawn – Making the New Primeval Part 2.
Beyond Primeval
- A North American spinoff, Primeval: New World, was announced in 2011 and ran for one season. It explored darker and older takes on the Primeval mythology.
- In later years, members of the original cast and creators spoke about the possibility of more Primeval, signaling ongoing fan interest, even though a sixth series did not materialize.
