Maryland Route 343
Maryland Route 343 (MD 343) is a state highway in Maryland, mostly known as Hudson Road. It runs 11.29 miles (18.17 km) from Hudson in northwestern Dorchester County east to US 50 in Cambridge. The route is part of the Maryland highway system and the National Highway System as a principal arterial within Cambridge. It lies entirely in Dorchester County.
The road was paved by the early 1930s. It originally went through downtown Cambridge, ending near its present eastern end. After the Choptank River Bridge and Sunburst Highway opened in 1935, MD 343 was shortened to the Sunburst Highway. In the mid-1950s it was rerouted along Washington Street to Race Street, ending at MD 16. In 1967, when MD 16 was moved to a Cambridge bypass, MD 343 was extended to its present terminus at US 50.
Route description: MD 343 begins where state maintenance starts on Hudson Road a short distance west of Cook Point Road near Hudson. It heads east as a two-lane road through farmland and forest, passes through the hamlets of Cornersville and Lloyds, and enters Cambridge, where the name changes to Washington Street. It intersects MD 341 in Cambridge, crosses the Seaford Line railroad, and continues to its eastern terminus at US 50. Traffic on eastbound MD 343 must use Crusader Road to access westbound US 50.
Auxiliary routes: MD 343 has two unsigned service roads near the eastern end.
- MD 343A is a 0.17-mile spur preserving Sunburst Highway’s north–south alignment just east of Dorchester Avenue.
- MD 343B is a 0.09-mile spur continuing the main highway’s alignment toward US 50.
