Marshall's Blacksmith Shop is a California Historical Landmark, number 319. It sits on private property near Kelsey, California, at the Gray Eagle Mine and was built in 1872 along what is now State Route 193 in El Dorado County. James W. Marshall was a blacksmith, carpenter, and sawmill operator, and he partly owned the Gray Eagle mine. Marshall is famous for finding gold at Sutter's Mill in Coloma on January 24, 1848, an event that started the California Gold Rush. He had been hired by John Sutter to build a sawmill at Sutter's Mill, but Marshall and Sutter did not profit from the discovery. The site is connected to Marshall and is commemorated at Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park.
