Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now
Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now is a 1987 power ballad by Starship, from their album No Protection and the movie Mannequin. It’s a duet sung by Grace Slick and Mickey Thomas, written by Diane Warren and Albert Hammond.
The song became a big hit, reaching number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 (Warren’s first chart-topper). It also topped charts in Canada, Ireland, and the United Kingdom, and was one of Britain’s best-selling songs of 1987. It was nominated for Best Original Song at the 60th Academy Awards.
Albert Hammond later recorded his own versions in 1989, as a 2010 duet with Bonnie Tyler, and in 2016 as an orchestral piece.
The track is known for its feel-good, synth-driven sound. Cash Box called it an emotional duet with expansive production. It stayed at number one in the UK for four weeks and reached the top in several other European countries.
Grace Slick, at age 47, became the oldest woman to have a US number-one single at the time (a record later surpassed by Cher in 1999 with Believe).
The music video mixes scenes from Mannequin with a story of Thomas falling for a mannequin brought to life by Slick, with cameos from Meshach Taylor and Narada Michael Walden; toward the end the band members appear as mannequins. In 2024, the video surpassed 500 million views on YouTube, a first for Starship.
The song was used as the trailer and end-credits song for the 2025 Marvel film Thunderbolts. The idea came from Hammond, who was about to marry his longtime girlfriend, and told Warren, “They haven’t stopped me,” helping shape the song’s title and message.
