Marcos Maidana
Marcos Maidana, nicknamed “The Chino,” is an Argentine former professional boxer who fought from 2004 to 2014. Born on July 17, 1983, in Margarita, Santa Fe, Argentina, he stood 5'7" tall, fought orthodox, and had a 69-inch reach. He competed mainly at light welterweight and welterweight, with a later stint at light middleweight. Maidana was known for his heavy punching power and aggressive style, and he was never stopped in any of his five losses. He finished his career with 35 wins (31 by knockout) and 5 losses in 40 professional fights.
Career highlights
- Maidana started strong, winning his first 18 fights in Argentina, 17 by knockout, and captured the WBA Fedelatin super lightweight title on his 18th bout. By the end of 2008 he was 25-0 with 24 knockouts.
- In 2009 he challenged Andreas Kotelnik for the WBA super lightweight world title but lost a controversial split decision.
- Maidana’s U.S. debut came in 2009 against Victor Ortiz for the interim WBA title. After a back-and-forth war, Ortiz could not continue, giving Maidana the win.
- He defeated DeMarcus Corley in 2010, then moved up in weight and faced Amir Khan in December 2010 in Las Vegas, losing a hard-fought unanimous decision in what was named Fight of the Year.
- In April 2011, Maidana beat Erik Morales in a brutal, action-packed fight to win the WBA regular super lightweight title (the scorecards showed a close battle, but Maidana prevailed).
- He made a defense against Petr Petrov in September 2011, stopping him in four rounds to keep the title.
- In 2012 Maidana moved up to welterweight, where he lost a wide decision to Devon Alexander. He later beat Jesus Soto Karass in a slugfest.
- In December 2013 he captured the WBA welterweight title by beating Adrien Broner by unanimous decision.
- Mayweather vs. Maidana: In May 2014, Maidana fought Floyd Mayweather in a tough, entertaining bout. Mayweather won by majority decision, but Maidana’s aggression challenged him and impressed fans. A rematch followed in September 2014, with Mayweather winning again by unanimous decision. A biting incident occurred in the rematch, which Maidana denied.
Retirement and legacy
- Maidana announced his retirement on August 9, 2016, at age 33, moving into an advisory role. He finished with a pro record of 35 wins and 5 losses, including 31 knockouts, across 40 fights.
