Louis Chedid is a French singer and songwriter born on January 1, 1948, in Ismaïlia, Egypt. He comes from a family with Lebanese, Syrian, and Egyptian roots and is the son of writer Andrée Chedid. He is the father of musician Matthieu Chedid, known as -M-.

As a child, Louis sang in the famous French Catholic boys’ choir Manécanterie des Petits Chanteurs à la Croix de Bois. He loved jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt and decided to pursue music after leaving school.

His first album, Balbutiements (1973), didn’t attract much attention. He gained fame with La Belle and T’a beau pas être beau in 1977. In 1981, Ainsi soit-il (Amen) topped the charts, and in 1985 Anne ma sœur Anne criticized the rise of the far-right in France.

He published an autobiographical novel, 40 Berges Blues, in 1992. He also composed Le Soldat Rose (The Pink Soldier), a fairytale musical released in 2006. The songs from Le Soldat Rose have been performed by artists including his son -M-, Vanessa Paradis, Jeanne Cherhal, Francis Cabrel, Alain Souchon, and Bénabar.
