Lucy v. Adams (1955) was a U.S. Supreme Court case decided on October 10, 1955. Autherine Lucy and Polly Anne Myers, two African American applicants, were refused admission to the University of Alabama solely because of their race. The Supreme Court reinstated a lower court injunction that barred the university from denying them admission or blocking their study based on race. The Court denied the university’s request to lift the injunction, effectively protecting the right of these applicants to enroll and pursue courses at the University of Alabama. The decision, written by Chief Justice Earl Warren and joined by all justices, affirmed the principle that citizens cannot be kept out of public universities because of their race.
