List of sheriffs of Monmouth County, New Jersey
Monmouth County, New Jersey has had sheriffs dating back to colonial times. It was part of East Jersey and later the Province of New Jersey. After English control began in 1665, a legal system based on English common law was established. In 1673, during a short Dutch control, the office was called a schout. An act to appoint sheriffs was passed on March 1, 1682, formalizing the role. Early sheriff terms were one year, with a maximum of three consecutive terms. Under the 1947 New Jersey Constitution, each county has three constitutional officers: County Clerk, County Surrogate, and Sheriff. The Sheriff is elected for a three-year term, with no term limits. Shaun Golden has been the 76th Sheriff of Monmouth County since 2010.
