The Pakistan Premier League is the top football league in Pakistan. The national championship began on May 28, 1948 as the National Football Championship, a knockout competition, and it stayed the main competition until the Pakistan Premier League started in 2004. A domestic cup, the Pakistan National Football Challenge Cup, was added in 1979.

The first NFL season (1948–49) saw Sindh Red win the title. In the NFL era, Karachi-based Pakistan Airlines won the most championships, nine times. In the Pakistan Premier League era, most champions have been from Punjab, with Khan Research Laboratories of Rawalpindi winning five times—the most in the Premier League era. Overall, Pakistan Airlines has the most championships, nine in total.

Punjab dominates the league overall with 31 titles across Faisalabad, Lahore, and Rawalpindi. From 1960 to 1965, Karachi (Sindh) and Dacca (East Bengal) dominated; Dacca won 1960–61 and 1961–62, while Karachi won three straight titles from 1962–63 to 1964–65. Only three clubs have won the double in Pakistan football. Some teams have dissolved over time.
