That Ol' Wind

That Ol' Wind is a country song by Garth Brooks, co-written with Leigh Reynolds. It was released on September 30, 1996 as the sixth and final single from the album Fresh Horses. The song reached number 4 on the U.S. country charts and number 3 in Canada.

It’s a mid-tempo ballad about two lovers who have been separated for a long time. A woman drops her child at school and hears on the radio that a singer will be back in town for one last show. She goes to his concert and reunites with her lover after ten years apart, with the line “that ol' wind had once again found its way home.” In the bridge, each of them has a secret: her secret is that her son is the singer’s child from a one-night stand ten years earlier; his secret is that he has hidden some money. They don’t reveal these secrets, but they’re glad to be back together.

Nashville Scene praised the song, calling it one of the powerful moments on the album. Leigh Reynolds, the co-writer, received a BMI Million-Air award after the song reached one million radio spins. The track appeared on the charts as an album cut in December 1995 and was officially released to radio in late 1996, peaking at number 4 in December 1996.
