Patterdale Terrier
Patterdale Terrier
What is it
- A small to medium, sturdy working dog from the Lake District in England. It’s a “type” of terrier bred for hunting, not just a pet show dog.
- Bred to face quarry directly in rough, rocky terrain and to stay active for long work days.
Appearance
- Size: usually 10 to 15 inches tall at the shoulder; compact and well balanced.
- Build: strong, athletic, and alert.
- Coat types: three options – smooth (short and coarse), broken (short body with longer hair on the body, smoother on head/face), and rough (longer hair all over).
- Colors: commonly black, red, chocolate, or black and tan. Small white markings on the chest or paws can be present. Chocolate dogs have a brown or red nose.
Temperament and care
- Energetic and bold with a strong drive to chase and hunt.
- Primarily a working terrier; they’re often kept as pets too, but they need lots of exercise, mental stimulation, and socialization.
- Can be challenging to socialize and may not be a good fit for very quiet or sedentary homes.
- Training should emphasize positive, consistent handling and early socialization.
History
- Developed in the 18th century by mixing various northern terrier types, especially in the Lake District.
- Early breeders included poachers and hunters who used them to hunt foxes in tough terrain.
- Cyril Breay, a huntsman in northern England, helped refine the breed; many consider today’s Patterdale Terriers descended from his dogs.
- The breed is viewed more as a “working type” rather than a strict show breed.
Coat and color notes
- Coat texture is important for working in rocky country: smooth for easy movement, broken for protection, rough for extra warmth.
- Colors are mainly black, red, chocolate, or black and tan. Chocolate noses are common on chocolate-coated dogs.
In the United States
- The Patterdale Terrier Club of America (founded in 1993) was the first registry in the U.S.
- The United Kennel Club (US) recognizes the Patterdale Terrier, but the American Kennel Club does not.
Bottom line
The Patterdale Terrier is a hardy, high-energy working dog from England. It’s best for active people who can provide plenty of exercise, challenging tasks, and good socialization. If you’re looking for a brave, responsive companion who loves a job, this might be a good match.
