List of Major League Baseball managers
Major League Baseball (MLB) is the top level of professional baseball in North America and includes 30 teams. Since 2000, the two leagues have operated as one organization under the commissioner.
Each team has a manager who sets strategy, leads the players, and decides the lineup and substitutions during games, with help from coaches. In the early days, some teams had player-managers who both played and managed; Pete Rose was the last player-manager, starting with the Cincinnati Reds in 1984.
As of the end of the 2025 season, the longest-serving active managers with the same team are Kevin Cash of the Tampa Bay Rays (since 2015) and Dave Roberts of the Los Angeles Dodgers (since 2016).
Connie Mack holds the records for most games won as a manager (3,731) and most games managed (7,755). In the World Series era, Joe McCarthy and Casey Stengel each won seven championships with the New York Yankees.
Many franchises have long histories of managers. The Braves began in Boston in 1871 and have had many leaders across three cities. The Dodgers started in Brooklyn and moved to Los Angeles, with legendary managers such as Walter Alston and Tommy Lasorda. Other franchises with famous managers include the Cubs, Giants, Red Sox, Mets, Phillies, Astros, Yankees, Rangers, Mariners, Padres, and White Sox, all of whom have contributed memorable chapters to the story of baseball.
A manager’s legacy is built not only on wins and titles but also on how they shape the team, develop players, and guide teams through seasons and playoffs. The role continues to adapt as the game changes.
