Blue (O'Keeffe series)
Blue is the name of four paintings Georgia O'Keeffe made in 1916. They are watercolors that use a monochrome blue palette with abstract, non-representational designs. The works were painted on small sheets of Japanese Gampi tissue, measuring 15 7/8 by 11 inches (40.3 cm by 27.9 cm). Blue No. 2 was created in Virginia before she moved to Texas. Some people think Blue No. II shows her connection to music—the curved lines resemble the neck of a violin, which she played at the time. The blue color and lines might express musical emotion, possibly inspired by Kandinsky. Another view compares the lines to those in her 1916 charcoal drawing No. 8 Special.
