Szentgotthárd
Szentgotthárd is the westernmost town of Hungary, located on the Rába River near the Austrian border. It grew up around the Szentgotthárd Abbey, a Cistercian monastery founded in 1183.
Historically, the town is known for two battles: in 1664 the Battle of Saint Gotthard, where Austrian forces defeated the Ottoman Empire, leading to the Peace of Vasvár; and in 1705 a battle where Hungarian rebels under Rákóczi won. In World War II, Soviet troops captured Szentgotthárd on 31 March 1945 during the Vienna Offensive. The town is also considered a center of the Rába Slovenes, Slovenians living in the region.
