Le Repentir Cemetery is Georgetown’s main and largest cemetery in Guyana. It was opened in March 1861 on Princess Street.

Before Le Repentir, Georgetown used a town cemetery at Werk-en-rust, which began in 1797 but was deemed unsuitable for general use in 1846.

Le Repentir started in 1861. It was part of Plantation Le Repentir, named by its owner Pierre Louis de Saffon. The first burial there was Antonio Gonzales, a 45-year-old man from Madeira, on March 15, 1861.

The cemetery has sections for many faiths and groups, including Muslims, Hindus, Roman Catholics, Anglicans, Lutherans, Chinese, Bahá’ís, Presbyterians, and a Bahá’í section.

Notable burials include the five Enmore Martyrs, Egbert Martin (a founder of modern Guyanese literature), and Randolph Holder, a New York City police officer killed in the line of duty.
