Barbara Crow

Barbara Crow is a Canadian sociologist and university administrator. She was the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Queen’s University in Kingston and also a professor in the Department of Sociology.

Education and early career
Crow studied at York University, earning a BA in political science and women’s studies in 1984, followed by an MA in 1986 and a PhD in 1994, all from York. She began her academic career at the University of Calgary in 1993 as an assistant professor and was later promoted to associate professor. In 2001 she returned to York University as an associate professor and took on leadership roles, including Associate Vice-President Graduate and Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies (AVP Graduate and Dean) during her time there.

Queen’s University and leadership roles
In December 2016, Queen’s University announced Crow as the new Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, and she began a five-year term on July 1, 2017. She served in this position until her retirement on August 1, 2024.

Research and contributions
Crow’s research is interdisciplinary, spanning feminism, aging, and digital technology. She helped found the Mobile Media Lab and was a co-principal investigator on the Ageing + Communication + Technologies (ACT) Project. She also led the Canadian Women’s Studies Association and edited several journals and books, including Radical Feminism: A Documentary Reader, Open Boundaries: A Canadian Women’s Studies Reader, and The Wireless Spectrum: The Politics, Practices and Poetics of Mobile Communication.

Personal life and legacy
Crow is married to Michael Longford, an associate professor at York University. In 2015 they made a legacy gift to York University to support future students. York University now honors her contributions with the Barbara Crow Graduate Student Leadership Award.
