Kupsabiny language
Kupsabiny (Sabiny), also called Sebei, is a Nilotic language in eastern Uganda. It belongs to the Southern Nilotic branch of the Kalenjin languages, in the Elgon subgroup. Its closest relative is Sabaot, spoken across the border in Kenya.
Spoken by the Sebei people, mainly in Kween, Kapchorwa, and Bukwo districts, it had about 270,000 native speakers in 2014, with around 360,000 speakers worldwide. The number of speakers is growing, and the language is developing. It is taught in many primary schools to improve communication across Uganda.
Kupsabiny is highly tonal, with high, mid, and low tones. It uses the Latin alphabet, adopted in 1975 and revised in 2010. The language has 9 vowels and 14 consonants, with various consonant allophones.
