Lizzie Newton: Victorian Mysteries
Lizzie Newton: Victorian Mysteries is a Korean manhwa series written by Hey-jin Jeon and drawn by Ki-ha Lee. It ran from 2011 to 2013 and you can find six volumes. The English edition is published by Seven Seas Entertainment, based on the original Korean Daewon C.I. release.
The story is set in London in 1864, in a world where Sherlock Holmes exists but as a boy who hasn’t yet teamed up with Watson. The main character is Elizabeth "Lizzie" Newton, a young woman who writes popular mystery books under a male pen name, Logica Docens, for Gentlemen's Own magazine. She also solves real-life crimes. Lizzie loves collecting books and doing chemical experiments.
Lizzie’s fiancé Edwin White is by her side. He used to be a top barrister known as "The White Devil of the Courtroom" and now serves as Lizzie’s steward so he can stay close to her. Together they face various crimes and mysteries, while dealing with sexist attitudes from some male characters, such as Inspector Charles B. Gray and Andrew R. Kenneth, the president of Gentlemen’s Own.
Throughout the series, other Sherlock Holmes characters appear as younger versions: Inspector Lestrade appears in the first volume, and Professor Moriarty is shown as a student named James in the second volume.
Reception has been mixed. Some reviews praise the blend of mystery, romance, and art, and enjoy the way Lizzie uses science to solve cases. Others feel the stories rely on clichés or that the dialogue can be awkward. Some critics also note occasional issues with clothing accuracy in the art, but many still appreciate the Victorian setting and atmosphere.
