Kovvur
Kovvur is a town in East Godavari district, Andhra Pradesh, India. It serves as the headquarters of Kovvur mandal and has a municipality formed in 1965. The town covers about 24.56 square kilometers and sits around 9 meters above sea level. As of 2011, about 39,700 people lived here, with a literacy rate around 70%.
Kovvur lies on the west bank of the Godavari River, about 92 kilometers from Eluru. It has road and rail connections, including bridges across the river. The APSRTC bus station serves many routes, and the bus depot reopened in 2015. Kovvur is a D-category railway station in the Vijayawada division of the South Central Railway and is expected to become a major junction after the Kovvur–Bhadrachalam line is completed. The nearest airport is Rajahmundry Airport, about 15 kilometers away.
The town is known for its peaceful, devotional atmosphere and the Goshpada Kshetram, a sacred site where the Godavari Pushkaralu festival takes place. Local legends connect the area to Gautama Maharishi and the origin of the Godavari River (also called Gautami). Nearby place names such as Vijjeswaram and Kumaradevam, and areas like Arikirevu, Togummi, and Chagallu, are tied to these stories.
Education in Kovvur is provided by government, aided, and private schools, with Telugu and English as mediums of instruction. Notable institutions include ABN & PRR College of Sciences and several Sanskrit colleges.
