George Howes (Vermont Treasurer)
George Howes (November 14, 1814 – January 30, 1892) was a Montpelier, Vermont businessman and political figure who served as Vermont State Treasurer. He was born in Montpelier to Martha and Joseph Howes and grew up there. In 1834 he began a career as a merchant with Elisha P. Jewett and also served as a justice of the peace. He returned to Montpelier in 1868 and lived mostly in semi-retirement while managing his investments. He also served for several years as Vermont’s federal agent paying pensions to Union Civil War veterans. Howes died in Montpelier on January 30, 1892, and was buried at Green Mount Cemetery. In 1871 he married Helen Holmes Anderson.
