Dexter, New York
Dexter is a small village in Jefferson County, New York. It sits in the southern part of the town of Brownville, next to the Black River near Black River Bay, and is about 7 miles west of Watertown. The village covers about 0.8 square miles and is mostly land with a little water, housing around 1,000 residents.
Dexter was once called Fish Island and was part of land owned by the Brown family. It was renamed after Simon Newton Dexter, one of its early investors, and became an incorporated village in 1855. The Dexter Universalist Church is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. New York Route 180 runs through the village, connecting it to Limerick to the north and areas near Sackets Harbor to the south. Watertown is about 7 miles to the east.
