Kim Wan-sun
Kim Wan-sun (born Kim I-sun on May 16, 1969, in Seoul) is a South Korean pop singer and actress who rose to fame in the mid-1980s and early 1990s. She earned the nicknames the "Korean Madonna" and the "dancing queen" of Korea’s pop renaissance for her energetic dancing and charismatic stage presence. She debuted in 1986 with the album Tonight at age 17.
Her fifth album, Pierrot Smiles at Us (1990), sold over 1 million copies, making her the first Korean female solo artist to reach that milestone. Kim trained as a singer and dancer from a young age under her aunt, Han Baek-hee, who managed successful stars. Because of her demanding training, Kim left school and later studied digital art at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. She won Rookie of the Year at several awards in 1986, including the Golden Disc Awards and the KBS Music Awards.
Kim’s fame also spread to Taiwan in the mid-1990s, helping to establish the wave of Korean popular music. In 1992, she briefly retired as her aunt planned to promote her as an "Asian singer" rather than just a Korean star. She moved to Taiwan and Hong Kong and released three Mandarin albums. It later emerged that she had financial debt due to her aunt’s management, so she took on acting and modeling work to make ends meet.
She returned to Korea in 1996 and released the seventh album Innocence, but she never regained her earlier level of popularity. After her aunt’s death, Kim took a long break from music and moved to Hawaii to study digital art for three years. She made a comeback in 2002 with the album S & Remake and followed with Return in 2005.
From 2011, Kim experienced a renewed career, releasing the mini-album Super Love and making frequent TV appearances. Her candid talks about her past and the public’s nostalgia helped her reconnect with new fans. In 2013 she was named one of Mnet’s Legendary 100 Artists and became the MC for MBC’s Beautiful Concert. In 2014 she became a visiting professor at Kookje University, and in 2015 she joined SBS’s Burning Youth as a regular cast member, winning Rookie of the Year at the SBS Entertainment Awards. She also did an interior-design collaboration for Hotel The Designers in 2015 and 2017, including a solo concert for her 30th debut anniversary.
In 2022 she held a public exhibition, Here I Am, in Ulsan. In 2025 she became a model for Hyundai Pharmaceutical’s Miero Fiber beverage and has since released new music, including digital singles and EPs, while collaborating with other artists and writing songs for various projects.
