Kelly the Second
Kelly the Second is a 1936 American romantic comedy directed by Gus Meins. It stars Patsy Kelly, Guinn Williams, and Charley Chase, and was produced by Hal Roach Studios with distribution by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. The title is a pun about a boxer's corner man. This film marks Charley Chase’s last feature for Roach after a 15-year run, as Roach moved away from feature films.
In the story, feisty Molly Kelly (Kelly) helps truck driver Cecil Callahan (Williams) become a professional boxer, with help from her boss Doc Klum (Chase). Things get complicated when mobster Ike Arnold, impressed by Cecil’s punching, becomes a partner and pushes Cecil to win. Ike’s girlfriend Gloria also wants Cecil, creating more trouble for Molly. A gag about The Irish Washerwoman appears, recycled from a Three Stooges short, and several of Roach’s regulars appear in small, uncredited roles.
