Nosaby level crossing accident

Date and place: 10 September 2004, 9:07 a.m., at the level crossing near Nosaby Church in Kristianstad, Sweden (Länsväg 118/Blekinge kustbana).

What happened: Train 357 bound for Malmö left Karlskrona at 7:33 a.m. A truck was trying to cross exactly as the barriers went down at 9:00. The train hit the truck trailer and the pellets in the trailer spilled. The force pushed the truck forward into another waiting truck. The first railcar derailed completely and spun 180 degrees; the second and third derailed as well, destroying the rail and embankment.

Casualties: The two train drivers at the front died; 47 passengers were injured.

Cause claimed by driver: He said the sun blinded him and he didn’t see the barriers.

Aftermath: On 19 December 2005, the Kristianstads District Court sentenced the truck driver to 1 year and 2 months in prison for reckless driving causing death and bodily harm.
