Kew is a small town on the Mid North Coast of New South Wales, Australia. It’s part of the Port Macquarie-Hastings Council area and is one of the communities that make up the Camden Haven district.
Location
Kew sits where Nancy Bird Walton Drive (the old Pacific Highway) meets Ocean Drive. It’s about 351 km north of Sydney, 48 km north of Taree, and 33 km south of Port Macquarie City Centre. The town lies at roughly 31.633°S, 152.717°E.
What’s there
Kew has a visitor information centre, a pub, a post office, a motel, a roadhouse, and a general store. The Big Axe is a well-known local landmark. A bypass was built to ease highway traffic; construction ran from 2007 to 2009 and the road opened to traffic in 2009.
Education and recreation
Camden Haven High School is about 2 km east of Kew on Ocean Drive. Kew Country Club is a bowling and golf club located about 200 metres west of the main roundabout; it features a lawn bowling green and an 18-hole golf course.
Transport
Daily coaches run along the Pacific Highway. NSW TrainLink services at Kendall station on the North Coast line, about 2 km to the west.
Population
In the 2016 Census, Kew had 1,089 residents. By the 2021 Census, the population was 1,761. Most people (as of 2016) were born in Australia (77.9%) and spoke only English at home (87.1%). The main religions were Anglican (29.3%), No Religion (23.2%), and Catholic (19.4%).
Notable people
Kew is associated with Nancy Bird Walton (1915–2009), a world-famous aviator.
