Julio César Chávez Jr., born February 16, 1986 in Culiacán, Mexico, is a pro boxer and the son of boxing legend Julio César Chávez. He turned pro at 17 and fought across weights, eventually winning the WBC middleweight title in 2011 by beating Sebastian Zbik and defending it against Peter Manfredo Jr. and Marco Rubio. He challenged Sergio Martínez in 2012 for a unification title but lost by decision and later tested positive for cannabis, receiving a nine-month suspension in 2013. Chávez had a notable rivalry with Brian Vera, winning a disputed decision in 2013 and then the rematch in 2014 for the vacant WBC Continental Americas super middleweight title. He was beaten by Andrzej Fonfara in 2015 but bounced back with a win over Marcos Reyes in a catchweight bout that year. He fought Canelo Álvarez in May 2017, losing a one-sided 12-round decision that drew strong TV numbers. In the following years he faced weight issues, suspensions, and sporadic bouts, including a loss to Daniel Jacobs and a 2021 bout with Anderson Silva (loss). Chávez appeared on Jake Paul–related events in 2024, scored a win over Uriah Hall, and then lost to Jake Paul in 2025. He notched a win against Angel Sacco in January 2026 at light heavyweight. Over his career Chávez has trained with several renowned coaches, including Nacho Beristáin and Freddie Roach.
