Joshua Key (footballer)
Joshua Myles Abraham Key (born 19 November 1999) is an English professional footballer who plays as a defender for Swansea City in the EFL Championship.
Key began his youth career with Torquay United before their academy was closed and he moved to Exeter City in 2015. He was part of Exeter’s successful under-18 side that won the Youth Alliance South West Division. He signed a senior contract with Exeter in 2018.
During his time with Exeter, Key had several loan spells to gain first-team experience: Bideford (early 2018), Tiverton Town (2018–2019), and again at Tiverton Town (2019–2020). He made his professional Exeter debut in November 2018 in an EFL Trophy match against Bristol Rovers. He scored his first Exeter goal in the EFL Trophy against Forest Green Rovers on 8 September 2020, and his first League Two goal in a 2–1 win at Mansfield Town on 26 September 2020. He made 129 league appearances for Exeter City, scoring 7 goals, from 2018 to 2023.
On 4 July 2023, Key signed with Swansea City on a three-year contract. Since joining Swansea, he has made 97 appearances and scored 4 goals (as of 31 January 2026).
Personal life: Key is of Irish descent through his grandmother and is the great-grandson of Myles Abraham, who captained the Ireland national rugby union team before World War I. He is eligible to represent the Republic of Ireland under FIFA’s grandparent rule.
