Josh Metellus
Josh Metellus is an American football safety for the Minnesota Vikings. He was born on January 21, 1998, in North Miami Beach, Florida. He played high school football at Charles W. Flanagan in Pembroke Pines, Florida, and then joined the Michigan Wolverines from 2016 to 2019. Metellus was named All-Big Ten twice during college and served as a team captain in his senior year. He also played in the 2020 Senior Bowl and the NFL Combine.
Metellus was selected by the Vikings in the sixth round of the 2020 NFL draft (205th overall). He signed a four-year contract with Minnesota but started on the practice squad before being promoted to the active roster in September 2020. He earned his first career start in 2022 and picked off Jared Goff in the closing seconds of a Week 3 win over the Detroit Lions.
In 2023, Metellus signed a two-year extension with the Vikings. He became known for his versatility in Brian Flores’ defense, playing 12 different positions through Week 14. In 2024, he and teammate Camryn Bynum became famous for their choreographed defensive turnover celebrations, drawing on popular movies. The pair combined for five interceptions that season.
Metellus extended his deal again in July 2025, agreeing to a three-year, $36 million contract with Minnesota. He started 14 games in 2025, recording two interceptions, six pass deflections, 0.5 sacks, and 86 tackles. He later had season-ending shoulder surgery announced in December 2025.
Off the field, Metellus is married to Hayley. They welcomed their first son, Joshua Syx, in April 2021 after Hayley faced childbirth complications and postpartum depression; they had a second child, a daughter, in March 2025.
