Set1 is a gene that encodes an enzyme called histone-lysine N-methyltransferase, which specifically methylates histone H3 on lysine 4 (H3K4). Set1 proteins are also known as COMPASS proteins. The first H3K4 methylase found in yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae Set1/COMPASS, is highly conserved across many species. The methylation carried out by Set1 is required for cell growth and helps silence transcription by repressing RNA polymerase II. The Set1-containing COMPASS complex (Set1C) also helps regulate transcription elongation and maintains telomere length.
