John Colahan Griffin Nature Reserve
John Colahan Griffin Nature Reserve is a 96-hectare conservation area in north-central Victoria, about 185 km northwest of Melbourne. Bush Heritage Australia bought it in 2011 with funds from the John Colahan Griffin estate. The reserve lies between St Arnaud Range National Park and Dalyenong Nature Conservation Reserve. It protects old-growth eucalypt woodland, including very large long-leaved box and yellow gum trees that are likely over 300 years old. The vegetation also includes grassy woodland, heathy dry forest, box-ironbark forest and alluvial terraces herb-rich woodland. The nationally endangered red cross and Stuart Mill spider orchids grow there. Animals spotted at the reserve include swift parrots, brown treecreepers, crested bellbirds, painted and black-chinned honeyeaters, fat-tailed dunnarts, lace monitors and woodland blind snakes. Coordinates: 36°47′S 143°21′E.
