John Barbour (footballer)

John R. Barbour (1 September 1890 – 15 July 1916) was a Scottish footballer who played as an inside right in the Scottish and English leagues for Glasgow Perthshire, Queen's Park, Dundee and Preston North End. Born in Gorbals, Scotland, he went to Hutchesons' Grammar School and later worked in the railway’s audit office while also serving as a Territorial soldier. He also played for Scotland Schoolboys.

Barbour’s club career included Glasgow Perthshire (1910–1913), Queen’s Park (1913–1914) with 33 appearances and 8 goals, Dundee (1914) with 16 appearances and 2 goals, and Preston North End (1914) with 12 appearances and 2 goals.

During the First World War, Barbour served as a lance corporal in the Highland Light Infantry. He was killed at High Wood, France, during the Battle of the Somme on 15 July 1916, aged 25. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
