Peter Wasserscheid, born on 23 October 1970 in Würzburg, is a German chemist and professor of chemical reaction engineering at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg. He and Matthias Beller won the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize in 2006. He studied chemistry at RWTH Aachen from 1991 to 1995, then earned his doctorate under Wilhelm Keim. After a postdoc at BP in the United Kingdom, he completed his habilitation at RWTH Aachen. Since October 2003 he has been the chair of Chemical Engineering at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg. He helped found Solvent Innovation GmbH and has served as its scientific supervisor since 2001. He is married with three children. His research focuses on ionic liquids, where he is a pioneer, especially in developing halogen-free ionic liquids.
