Eric Glass
Eric George "Tarzan" Glass (22 February 1910 – 29 July 1985) was an Australian rules footballer who played for East Fremantle in the WAFL, Melbourne in the VFL, and Williamstown in the VFA. Born in Northam, Western Australia, and raised in Goomalling, he began his senior career with East Fremantle in 1927. A strong, tough player who was initially seen as slow, Glass helped East Fremantle win WAFL premierships in 1930 and 1931, kicking two goals in each Grand Final.
In 1933 he moved to Victoria to join Melbourne, where he earned the nickname "Tarzan" for his fearless style. He started as a midfielder but became a top forward, peaking in 1936 with 56 goals and the club’s leading goalkicker as Melbourne finished third. After 1938 he left Melbourne and joined Williamstown in the VFA, playing as a ruck-rover and helping them win the 1939 premiership by a single point.
Glass served in the Royal Australian Air Force during World War II, interrupting his football career after the 1941 season. After the war he returned to Williamstown, serving as vice-captain and playing in the 1945 Grand Final victory over Port Melbourne. He finished his VFA career with 82 games and 54 goals.
He died in 1985 in Ashwood, Victoria, and was buried at Springvale. In 2003 he was posthumously named in Williamstown’s Team of the Century as the ruck-rover.
