Joanna Cameron
JoAnna Cameron, born Patricia Kara Cameron on September 20, 1948, in Greeley, Colorado, was an American actress and model best known for playing Isis in the 1970s TV show Isis, which later aired in reruns as The Secrets of Isis. She studied at Greeley Central High School and the University of California, Riverside. While in college, she befriended Linda Hope, daughter of Bob Hope, who later cast her in the 1969 film How to Commit Marriage, helping start her acting career. Cameron appeared in films such as B.S. I Love You and Pretty Maids All in a Row and had TV roles on The Bold Ones: The New Doctors, Columbo, and Marcus Welby, MD. She was also famous for her many TV commercials, reportedly holding a Guinness World Record for the number of ads she did.
In 1975 Cameron was cast as Isis, a high-school science teacher who finds an ancient amulet that grants her the powers of the goddess Isis when she speaks the phrase, "O mighty Isis!" Her powers include super strength, speed, flight, and telekinesis, which she used to fight crime. Isis aired from 1975 to 1977, with 22 episodes, and later appeared in syndication as The Secrets of Isis; the character also joined the show Shazam! briefly.
After Isis, Cameron appeared in McMillan & Wife and The Amazing Spider-Man, hosted the Navy Network, and directed a Naval Academy commercial called Razor Sharp. She was widely recognized for her work in commercials, and at one time was listed in Guinness for the most TV commercials. Her last screen credit was the 1980 TV movie Swan Song. She then worked as a nurse in home healthcare for about ten years before moving into hotel marketing.
JoAnna Cameron died on October 15, 2021, in Oahu, Hawaii, from complications of a stroke. Her former Isis co-star Cindy Lee (JoAnna Pang Atkins) announced her death.
