Tim Ellis (bishop)
Timothy William Ellis (born 26 August 1953) is a retired British bishop of the Church of England. He served as Bishop of Grantham in the Diocese of Lincoln from 2006 to 2013 and was the area bishop from 2010 to 31 January 2013.
Ellis was educated in Sheffield, trained for ministry at King's College London and St Augustine's College Canterbury, and earned a PhD at York University. He was ordained in the late 1970s and began his career with a curate position at St John’s Church, Old Trafford, Manchester. He later became Vicar of Pendleton, Vicar of St Leonard, Norwood (Sheffield), Rural Dean of Ecclesfield, and Canon of Sheffield Cathedral. Before his episcopal consecration, he served as Archdeacon of Stow and Lindsey in the Diocese of Lincoln.
As a bishop, Ellis was known for celebrating England’s first U2charist and for organising a national vigil before the Gulf War. He has been active in ecumenical and community work, chairing Sheffield Faiths Together and the East Midlands Community Led Housing Trust. Since retiring from full-time episcopal duties, he has been an honorary assistant bishop in the Sheffield and Derby dioceses. In 2017 he joined other retired bishops in signing a letter opposing the Church of England’s sexuality report, which was later rejected by the General Synod.
Ellis has also served on the Fabric Advisory Council for Sheffield Cathedral and on the Advisory Panel on the Archaeology of Christian Burials. He is a former vice-chair of the Council for the Care of Churches and, in December 2024, was appointed chair of the Diocesan Advisory Committee for the Diocese of Sheffield. He is married to Susan and they have three children.
