Inferno (Dante Pertuz)
Inferno, whose real name is Dante Pertuz, is a Marvel Comics superhero and Inhuman. Created by Charles Soule and Joe Madureira, he first appeared in Inhuman #1 (2014) as part of the Inhuman series backup to The Amazing Spider-Man.
Background
Dante is from Des Plaines, Illinois. He worked as a drummer to support his pregnant sister and sick mother. After the Terrigen Mist is released during the Inhumanity event, Dante awakens Inhuman powers. He becomes the first NuHuman (a person with both human and Inhuman ancestry) to join Inhuman society.
Powers and abilities
- Inhuman physiology gives him enhanced strength, speed, durability, and reflexes.
- Pyrokinetic powers: creates and controls flames from nothing, including volcano-like blasts.
- Heat immunity: immune to extreme heat and flames.
- Pyroplasmic regeneration: heals injuries and can even regrow lost limbs.
- Volcanic form: body can become a fiery, molten, lava-covered state.
- Flight.
Story and roles
Dante trains as a soldier under Gorgon and befriends NuHumans like Flint, Naja, and Kamala Khan (Ms. Marvel). He helps defend Attilan and is part of efforts to locate the missing Inhuman king Black Bolt. A betrayal by Lineage leads to a Jersey City crisis, which Dante helps end alongside Kamala. He becomes a close ally of Medusa’s and supports his sister Gabriella, who gives birth during the conflict.
In Secret Wars, Inferno dies when Earth-616 collides with Earth-1610, but Doctor Doom resurrects him on Battleworld. He later appears in Inhumans vs. X-Men and Secret Empire, continuing to fight alongside the Secret Warriors.
In other media
Inferno appears in Marvel Rising: Secret Warriors and Marvel Rising: Ultimate Comics, voiced by Tyler Posey. Hasbro released a Dante Pertuz / Inferno doll in 2018 inspired by Marvel Rising.
Summary
Inferno is a fiery Inhuman warrior from Des Plaines who can create flames, fly, and endure extreme heat. He grows from a protective family member into a key member of the Inhuman community and its extended allies.
